Sonys new Nexelion hybrid lithium ion batteries PDF Print E-mail

Handycam Camcorders First to Benefit from Next-Generation Energy Source

ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 19, 2005 -PMA Conference Booth # 3032 - Sony is breathing new life into battery performance with the industry's first "hybrid lithium ion" rechargeable battery.

{mosaddphp:/ads4.php}

The battery (model NP-FP71) leverages a newly developed hybrid energy source, resulting in a 30% increase in capacity compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries, as well as quicker charging times and extended battery life at low temperatures. It will initially be offered with Handycam® camcorder products, and is designed to be fully compatible with previously released Handycam camcorders and rechargers.

In developing this next-generation lithium ion battery, the aim was to increase capacity beyond that of conventional batteries. Instead of using more common graphite-based materials, Sony developed new hybrid materials that can hold more lithium ions than previously possible. As a result, the NP-FP71 battery's storage capacity has been greatly increased, boosting the shooting time by 20% in normal conditions and by 30% in low temperatures.

" We are always pushing to improve battery performance," says Jim Leahey, director for Sony Electronics' peripheral and enhancement products. "We are thrilled to introduce a new high-capacity battery material that surpasses current lithium-ion batteries. By taking the lead in next generation batteries, we are once again providing our customers with innovative solutions that allow them to increase the enjoyment of their Sony camcorders."

Key Features of the NP-FP71 hybrid lithium ion rechargeable battery include:

1. Tin-Based Amorphous Anode

Instead of the more conventional graphite-based materials for the anode, the NP-FP71 incorporates a newly developed tin-based amorphous anode consisting of multiple elements such as tin, cobalt, and carbon. By adding several elements to the tin-based compound, Sony has been able to minimize the change in particle shape during charge and discharge. The result is a 50% higher storage capacity of lithium ions compared to the conventional graphite anode.

2. Multi-stage Composite Cathode

Multiple metal atoms such as cobalt, nickel, and manganese are incorporated in the cathode's crystal structure to form a multi-metal oxide material. By introducing this multi-stage composite cathode, Sony realized a higher capacity with the same charging voltage. Moreover, excess discharge can be avoided, resulting in greater battery reliability.

3. Enhanced Low-Temperature Characteristics

The NP-FP71 battery retains 95% of its capacity at 0 degrees Celsius, up from 85% efficiency in conventional batteries. At lower temperatures, the difference becomes even greater. This means camcorder users can enjoy improved shooting times while engaging in winter activities like skiing and snowboarding.

4. Enhanced Charging Efficiency

Although the NP-FP71 battery provides so much more power than conventional batteries, the recharge time is only 10% longer. The new battery can be 90% charged in approximately 30 minutes.
