Photo Safari to Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge
PIEA
P1  Friday, February 18  5:30AM - 1:00PM

The bus departs from the Radisson Barcelo Hotel at 5:30 AM and returns to the Radisson about 1:00 PM.

The 140,000-acre Refuge has over 500 species of wildlife, salt marshes with boardwalks, forest trails in a varied Florida landscape that is also home to the Kennedy Space Center. You may see wildflowers, bald eagles, herons, egrets, brown pelicans, wood storks, and just maybe rare roseate spoonbills. We promise alligators. First stop is for the 6:59 AM sunrise at Spaceview Park in Titusville, Florida overlooking the Indian River Lagoon. Then we cross the water to Merritt Island where there are two trails: the ½-mile Oak Hammock Trail and the 1½-mile Palm Hammock Trail. Next we are off to the Visitor Center for a video presentation about the Refuge and the ¼-mile handicapped-accessible boardwalk adjacent to the Center. We'll end by stopping at Haulover Canal to see if the Manatees are there. Merritt Island is a premier winter bird viewing area on the East Coast so bring binoculars and a bird guidebook. To photograph wildlife, you need a good telephoto lens and tripod or monopod. Wear long pants, boots or good walking shoes and bring a light jacket, hat, bug repellant and drinking water. We will stop for a Dutch-treat early lunch at the famous Dixie Crossroads Restaurant in Titusville before returning to Orlando.

Cost: $20 member/$25 non-member.

An Evening With an Artist, John Paul Caponigro
PIEA
P7  Saturday, February 19  7:00PM - 9:00PM

Sponsored by Epson America, Inc. and MAC Group

John Paul Caponigro has carved out a niche for himself by breaking new ground and using digital technology as the ultimate hybrid art form, combining drawing, painting, photography, film sequencing, and even sculpture into what he calls visual art. His images have an emotional impact that catches the eye and stops the viewer in one's tracks. Your eyes delight in the first impressions, admiring the simple yet elegant composition. You continue to absorb the image realizing that you are seeing and feeling more as each moment passes. It dawns on you: could this image have been created at least partly in a computer? John Paul would say you two just had a conversation. We promise you an unforgettable evening with a master of many arts and his lecture "Painting with Photography." After the lecture we will raffle ten copies of John Paul's acclaimed book, Master Class.

Admission is free to all badged convention attendees. Students must obtain a ticket through their teachers.
